Battle of Britain Day – 15 September

Commemorations of the Battle of Britain in September each year began very quickly after the battle. Early formalization of the principle appears in Home Security Circular No 138/1943, dated 24 August 1943 and headed, ‘Battle of Britain Sunday’. This announced that:

‘His Majesty the King has approved a proposal that Civil Defence Day, which would have been held this year, shall be combined with the Royal Air Force Commemorations of the Battle of Britain, and Sunday 26th September, 1943 has been appointed to be observed as Battle of Britain Sunday.’
